Shoe Bench
The Ashford sits at the threshold between furniture categories deliberately. At 47 cm, it is low enough to function as a hallway bench for putting on shoes, low enough to sit comfortably beneath a wall-mounted television, and wide enough at 132 cm to read as a credenza in a living room or bedroom. The solid bamboo frame and woven rattan cane panels give it a material language that moves between rooms without adjustment. Behind four doors — paired into two independent compartments — each interior holds a fixed central shelf, creating two levels of storage per section. The configuration accommodates boots on the lower tier and flat shoes or accessories above, without requiring the doors to be opened to identify what is inside: the rattan cane weave allows a degree of visibility through the closed panel while keeping the interior contained. The bamboo top is 132 cm wide and fully flat — proportioned for a lamp, a bag, or a row of objects, without the piece dominating a room it sits low inside.
At 47 cm, the Ashford sits at the crossing point between storage unit and bench seating. The top surface is wide enough to sit on while putting on shoes, shallow enough at 33 cm to fit along a hallway wall without narrowing the passage, and low enough to act as a media unit beneath a wall-mounted screen. The bench-height format gives the piece a usability across rooms that taller cabinet formats do not have.
Each door panel features a traditional woven rattan cane weave set into the bamboo door frame. The weave allows air to circulate through the closed compartment — keeping stored footwear dry — while providing a degree of interior visibility without fully exposing the contents. The cane texture introduces natural variation and depth to what would otherwise be a flat panel face, and ages gradually to a warmer honey tone with light exposure.
The cabinet is divided into two independent compartments, each with a fixed central shelf creating upper and lower storage tiers. The lower tier sits close to the floor — suited to flat shoes and trainers; the upper tier accommodates ankle boots or folded items. The two-compartment format allows the left and right halves to be used independently — organised by household member, shoe type, or season — without the entire cabinet needing to be opened to access one side.
